Sapphire is associated with those born under the sign of Virgo (August 23rd - September 22nd). People usually know that Sapphires are a hard gemstone but what most do not know is that Sapphire’s come in more than just deep blue. Sapphires can actually come in every color in the rainbow - but not red - as those are classified as Rubies. Sapphires and Rubies both have a base of Corundum, chromium is the element that can create a pink or purple gemstone hue, where as titanium and iron create the well known deep blue Sapphires. There is a name for the rarest hue of Sapphire, Padparadscha, which is considered a ‘fancy’ color and is a mix of orange and pink hues. Sapphires have been treasured for centuries, first they were found over 2,500 years ago in Sri Lanka, Kashmir, and Myanmar. In the 19th century, new deposits were discovered in Montana and then in Madagascar. Ancient Persians believed that the earth sat atop a great Sapphire that reflected its blue hue back to create the blue sky. Many cultures around the world prized and wore Sapphires. Most ancient civilizations believed is that Sapphires offered wisdom, protection and spiritual enlightenment to its bearer as well as allowing them to speak their truth. Interestingly enough, Sapphires are used in many items that we use daily - such as durable windows (protection), watches (wisdom), cell phones and aerospace instruments (which is close enough to spiritual enlightenment to me!). Sapphires are a great choice for rings that are worn daily as they are some of the strongest gemstones, only Diamonds are harder & stronger.
